Wake up to contract regret at the SMARTY coffee bar
We all know that signing a long-term contract can sometimes feel like a leap of faith—one that, unfortunately, can lead to “contract regret.” That’s why, here at SMARTY Mobile, we’re bringing a fresh twist to the coffee “bar” concept. For two days only, on 12th and 13th November, we’re popping up at King’s Cross Station in London with Contractually Grinding—a coffee bar dedicated to helping you wake up to the ins and outs of contracts, so you can make smarter choices before you sign on the dotted line.
What’s brewing at contractually grinding?
At the SMARTY coffee bar, we’ll be serving up coffee alongside something you don’t usually find with your morning brew: contract advice from a real-life barrister! Dressed in full regalia (yes, that means cloaks and wigs!), a barrister will be on hand to answer your pressing questions about those tricky contracts we all encounter. Whether you’re rethinking a gym membership, dreading that internet subscription renewal, or feeling locked into a phone contract, our pop-up is here to offer you a chance to sip, chat, and make more confident decisions about your commitments.
Contract regret: the struggle is real
Let’s face it, getting excited about a new service or product can sometimes mean skipping the fine print. You’re not alone!
Our recent research shows that over one in three people in the UK has regretted signing up for a long-term contract. The top culprits? Gym memberships (30%), mobile phone contracts (30%), and internet service provider contracts (24%) are often to blame. And nearly half of Brits (49%) have been caught out by old, forgotten subscriptions renewing automatically.
But regret doesn’t have to be the norm. With 42% of people saying they’d consider seeking legal advice before signing a high-value contract in the future, we think it’s time to offer exactly that. Our goal at Contractually Grinding is to give you the guidance you need to make smarter decisions from the start, so you can avoid the pitfalls that leave so many of us feeling locked in.
Common causes of contract regret—and tips to avoid it
Our research revealed that regret often strikes after people spot a better deal they can’t switch to because they’re already committed—35% of people have faced this frustration. For others, it’s when they realize there’s still a full year left on the contract or after they feel the sting of that first hefty payment.
Here are some tips to help you avoid these all-too-familiar feelings:
1. Read the Fine Print: We get it—small print can be daunting. But if you’re signing up for a new contract, take a few extra minutes to scan the terms, focusing on clauses about early cancellation fees and automatic renewals.
2. Consider Flexibility: Look for providers that offer flexible terms, allowing you to pause, cancel, or adjust your plan without penalty. SMARTY’s monthly SIM plans, for example, let you enjoy flexibility without the lock-in commitment.
3. Set Reminders for Subscription Renewals: Avoid unexpected renewals by setting a calendar reminder before each renewal date. Many services auto-renew, and by staying ahead of it, you can decide if it’s still something you want to keep.
At SMARTY, we’re all about flexibility
We understand the importance of staying in control, and we know how frustrating it is when that flexibility isn’t there. That’s why we make it our mission to offer SIM only plans that give you the freedom to change, pause, or cancel each month. Our Contractually Grinding pop-up is our way of taking that commitment to flexibility beyond SIM plans, we want to help you feel empowered and informed about all the contracts in your life.
