8 ways to transform your home working space

We may have been working from home for over a year now, but there are still improvements we can make to improve our productivity. The first place to start is in your home office. So here are 8 hints and tips from SMARTY to give your workspace a makeover…

Blooming lovely

Why not brighten up your space by adding some indoor plants or flowers. It’ll definitely put you in a good mood. You can check out Bloom & Wild for some inspiration.

Smells good

Freshen up your workspace with a lovely scent. As you’re not in the office you can indulge in some scented candles to bring a calming atmosphere (and get rid of the smell of the kitchen). Flowers can also help your space smell nice.

Get rid of distractions

Whether it’s noisy kids, barking dogs or distracting DIY, it can be hard to stay focused when you work from home. It may be a good idea to invest in a pair of good noise cancelling headphones. Here’s an article that explores the best headphones of 2021.

Set some boundaries

If you have the space to have your workplace in a spare room, you can close the door and forget about it at the end of the day. But if you’re at the kitchen table or on the sofa, it can be tempting to carry on working. We definitely recommend taking the extra time to pack everything away each night to create more separation between your home and work life.

Take meaningful breaks

It’s important to take regular breaks from your desk while working from home. When we are in the office, we have tea breaks, chat with colleagues and go out for lunch, but at home we tend to stay sitting behind our desks – that’s not good for our eyes, our fitness or our mental health. Set yourself a Tomato Timer and get an alert when it’s time to take a break.

Make your own commute

While we are on the subject of breaks, you should try and use the time you’d be spending on commuting to do something productive. You could go for a walk, a run, a cycle, or even do some meditation.

Clean and clutter-free

With all that time spent at your desk – on the sofa or in the spare room – it can get pretty messy. Don’t let dust and crumbs or clutter distract you. Make sure you wipe down your keyboard every day and create a dedicated space for your papers.

Get the tunes on

When you feel your productivity lagging, why not turn to some tunes. Listening to music can give you a boost of creativity and help with your memory. You can even make specific playlists for the kind of concentration level you need on Spotify.

So there you have it. A few handy tips that are sure to transform the way you work from home.
